I’m a suburban mom, there is no getting around it. But I’m lucky enough to live in an area that gives me just a tiny bit of that country life I crave. We have farmland behind us and enough land to have a decent garden. I love a little gardening, yard work and getting my hands dirty. What I love even more is fresh veggies from the garden. Have you bit into sun ripened cherry tomato fresh from the vine? Oh my. So good. My daughters can’t get enough of them either.
I had a 3 x 12 foot raised bed the last two years. Although everything grew, the deer and rabbit got to enjoy more of my vegetables than my family. So, this year I was determined to step up my game. We had tried everything! Fox urine, chicken wire, fabric fence. You name it, we tried it. This spring, I came across an advertisement for a deer-proof garden kit. That was it. No turning back. Sadly for my husband, my father and my father-in-law I was not going to stop talking about it until it was built. I ordered the pre-built kit from GardenstoGro. I decided to order the lumber myself, which in retrospect is something I would do differently. They have two options:
1. A complete system including lumber and all materials
or
2. A Just-Add-Lumber Garden Kit
I thought it would be more economical to purchase my own lumber. I was wrong. Plain and simple. I’m willing to admit it (that doesn’t happen often enough according to my husband). I would highly suggest the complete system if its within your budget.
It took about two days and three men to complete. These guys were awesome. They built the garden of my dreams despite rain, cold and sleet. I also added the automatic watering system which meant renting a trench-digger and running a waterline (I don’t make things easy). I had a whole lot of soil delivered, mixed in some nutrients for great growing conditions and I was ready to plant. I then got to wander through the aisles of flowers, herbs, plants, shrubs and trees at Petitti’s Garden Center. This place is like Target for me… I could spend hours just wandering the aisles!
My garden is thriving now! I’ll be sure to share more about the perfect soil mixture and some great recipes straight from the garden. Share your favorite fresh from the garden recipes with me!
