I’m bored. There’s nothing to do. Blah, blah, blah. Sound familiar? Are you thinking to yourself why do I work so darn hard to give you all of these amazing things to listen to you complain that you are bored?! In the age when our kids are used to being constantly occupied, I find sometimes they don’t know what to do with downtime. When in fact, unstructured downtime is exactly what they need. Use that imagination kids!
Do your kids need some help coming up with activities? Make a boredom buster jar! Feel free to throw a few chores in there depending on the ages of your kids. You may find you don’t hear them complaining about being bored anymore.
Here are a few ideas.
- paint with outdoor items (leaves, sticks, flowers)
- create your own ninja warrior obstacle course
- make animal masks
- play library
- have a fashion show
- have a scavenger hunt (here is an example)
- make up a dance routine to your favorite song
- make homemade bubbles – insert link
- write a letter to someone special and then mail it
- learn magic tricks
- build a blanket fort
- clean out your dresser drawers
- go through your toys and make a donate bag for ones you don’t play with
I love that from these ideas, my kids create their own ideas. It’s fun to see the games they come up with, the elaborate ninja obstacle courses they construct, and the often unidentifiable crafts they create.
